Grand Salute To This Lady 'Neerja Bhanot'...!!
Neerja Bhanot'(September 7, 1963 – September 5, 1986, was a flight
attendant for Pan Am, based in Bombay, India, who died while saving
passengers from terrorists on board the
hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on September 5, 1986, she went on to become
the youngest recipient of India’s highest civilian award for bravery,
the Ashok Chakra.
Neerja Bhanot was the senior flight purser on the ill-fated Pan Am Flight 73, hijacked by four heavily armed terrorists after it landed at Karachi at 5 am from Mumbai. PA 73 was en route to Frankfurt and onward to New York City. Neerja alerted the cockpit crew about the hijack and, as the plane was on the tarmac, the three-member cockpit crew of pilot, co-pilot and the flight engineer were able to flee from the aircraft. Neerja, being the most senior cabin crew member on board, took charge.
The hijackers were part of the Palestinian Abu Nidal terrorist organization and were backed by Libya. They immediately shot dead a passenger who identified himself to the terrorists as being an American. The terrorists then instructed Neerja to get the passports collected of all the passengers, so that they could identify the Americans. Neerja, and the other attendants under her charge, hid the passports of the 19 (18 passengers + 1 crew) Americans on board - some under a seat and the rest down a rubbish chute.
After 17 hours, the hijackers opened fire and set off explosives. Neerja opened the emergency door and helped a number of passengers escape. She did not herself escape, and became a martyr while shielding 3 children from a hail of bullets. Neerja was recognised internationally as "the heroine of the hijack" and is the youngest recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest civilian award for bravery.
The hijackers, said to be from the Abu Nidal Organisation were captured by Pakistan, tried, convicted and sentenced to death in 1988 but later commuted to life in prison.
In 2001, Zayd Hassan Abd Al-Latif Masud Al Safarini, the hijacker who shot the passengers was captured by the FBI in Bangkok after being released by Pakistan. In the US, he is presently serving 160 years prison term in Colorado. Four others were freed from Pakistan's Adiala Jail in January 2008. The FBI announced a $5 million bounty on their head.
For her bravery the Government of India posthumously awarded her the Ashoka Chakra (India's highest decoration for gallantry away from the battlefield, or not in the face of the enemy), being its youngest recipient. In 2004 the Indian Postal Service released a stamp commemorating her.
With the money from the insurance settlement and an equal contribution from Pan Am, Neerja's parents set up the 'Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust'. The trust presents two awards every year, one for a flight crew member, worldwide, who acts beyond the call of duty and another to an Indian woman who, when faced with social injustice like dowry, desertion etc. overcomes it with guts and grit AND then helps other women in similar social distress. The award includes a sum of INR 1,50,000, a trophy and a citation.
Neerja's brother Aneesh Bhanot went to Washington DC, in 2005 to receive the 'Justice for Crimes Award' awarded posthumously to Neerja as part of the 'Annual Crime Rights Week', at a ceremony held at the United States Attorney's office for the District of Columbia. In 2006, she and the other Pan Am Flight 73 flight attendants and Pan Am's flight director for Pakistan were awarded the Special Courage award by the US Department of Justice.
A square called Neerja Bhanot Chowk is named after her in Mumbai's Ghatkopar (East) suburb by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, which was inaugurated by Amitabh Bachchan in the early 90's.
The civil aviation ministry of India conferred an honor on Neerja Bhanot posthumously on February 18, 2010 in New Delhi on the occasion of the launch of the celebrations of the centenary of Indian Aviation.

Another RAPE in Delhi...!!!
A
five-year-old girl is battling for her life after being allegedly
kidnapped and repeatedly raped by a neighbour in the Indian capital,
Delhi.
Reports say she was rescued by a passer-by who heard her cries on Wednesday. No arrests have been made.
The gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus in December sparked protests across India.
In a separate development, police in Delhi say they are also looking for a group of men who allegedly gang-raped a 19-year-old woman on Wednesday night.
Reports say the woman, who works as a domestic helper, was offered a lift in a vehicle by the men and then allegedly sedated and raped.
'Traumatised' The five-year-old girl has been admitted to a city hospital in a critical condition.
"The girl was traumatised when she was brought to us. There were injuries to her lips, cheeks and chest wall. There were bruises on her neck," RN Bansal, chief of Swami Dayanand hospital, told the NDTV news channel.
Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told the AFP news agency that police had launched a probe into the rape and "attempted murder" of the girl.
There have been protests outside the hospital where the girl is being treated.
Mr Bhagat said a case of rape had been registered in connection with the attack on the 19-year-old girl, who was found semi-naked by pedestrians on a road early on Thursday.
Doctors at the city's Safdarjung Hospital said she that although she was suffering from trauma, there were no signs of external injuries.
Reports said the woman, who is married and comes from from Nepal, was on the way to her brother's house from her employer's residence in the up-market Defence Colony neighbourhood when a car carrying the men stopped to ask her for directions and offered to drop her near her home.
The issue of sexual violence against women and girls has been under intense scrutiny in India after the rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus in December led to widespread protests.
Six people have been charged over the case which shocked the nation.
Five of them are on trial in a specially convened fast-track court and face the death penalty.
The sixth accused, a minor, is being tried in a juvenile court.
All six accused have pleaded not guilty.
Last month India passed a new bill containing harsher punishments, including the death penalty, for rapists.

International Women's Day
International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year.
In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general
celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a
celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.
Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia and the former Soviet bloc..
In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply
an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat
similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of
women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

Punjab shame: ‘I won’t budge, want justice’
Chandigarh: With the
national media shifting its focus on the shocking case of police
brutality in Punjab’s Taran Taran district, the victim on Tuesday said
that she will not budge under any pressure and wants justice.
Narrating her harrowing tale to Zee News, the young woman Harbinder Kaur (22) said, “I was thrashed, slapped and beaten by some Punjab policemen when I and my father approached them with a complaint of sexual harassment by truck drivers in Tarn Taran district.”
The lady further said that she had gone to attend at a marriage function at Gobindwal road where some truck drivers, who were under influence of alcohol, misbehaved with her and when her father resisted them, they beat him up as well.
“Those truck drivers created nuisance and then I and my father approached the Punjab policemen for help but they too sided with the truck drivers and abused me and my father,” the young woman said.
Demonstrating her resolve to seek justice from the higher authorities, she said, “I will not budge. I will not succumb to any pressure. I will fight for justice.”
The young woman further stated that after she was assaulted by the Punjab cops, they threatened her of dire consequences if she refused to give up.”
“The policemen threatened to take me to the police station where I would be badly assaulted by them and asked me to keep quiet,” she said.
The Taran Taran victim also regretted that no political leader or senior Punjab police official had visited her family after the incident.
“I have got no assurance from anyone in this regard but I will continue my fight for justice,” she said.
She also sent a message to the women across the country asking them not to tolerate such nuisances and instances of sexual assault and raise their voices against such heinous crimes.
“I am just a class 10th educated woman but when I can fight for justice
why cant the young and educated women of India raise their voice against
such incidents,” she said.
The young woman further told Zee News that she was even bribed by the guilty Punjab policemen to reach a compromise, which she refused.
Owing to a national outrage over the incident, the authorities in Punjab today suspended four policemen involved in the incident and initiated a departmental probe into the matter.
Raj Kumar Verka, Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Schedule Caste, also summoned the District Commissioner, SSP Taran Taran and IG of Amritsar Range, along with the woman and the family, to Amritsar for a hearing at 12 noon today.
The National Commission for Women chairperson Mamta Sharma demanded the resignation of state’s Home Minister for failing to prevent such sha, eful incidents.
"This barbaric incident took place when the girl went to the police for help, it is their duty to ensure that a judicial probe looks into the matter. The state Home Minister must also resign," NCW chairperson said.
Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi also expressed her anger against the errant policemen and said that suo motu action could be taken against them. "The video is evidence. They have got proof. They can take suo motu action," she said.
Congress leader Sunil Jakhad said that this was not an "uncommon instance". "This is police brutality. There is no law and order in Punjab. Now (CM Parkash Singh) Badal has ordered an inquiry. Suspension and inquiry are not the cure for such things. It is just a reflection of how the Akali-BJP government is functioning. This is goonda raj in uniform."
The matter came to fore after some Punjab policemen were caught on camera thrashing the young victim in full public view after she and her father approached them with a complaint of sexual harassment.
The woman alleged she was sexually harassed by truck drivers. When her family confronted them, policemen nearby allegedly took the side of the truckers.
