Google's Independence Day India doodles

India's national bird, the peacock, adorns the Google home page on India's Independence Day. The peacock curves its neck backwards to form the 'G' of the Google logo. The other letters of the Google logo appear in ornate styling behind the peacock's plume. Google has been commemorating India's Independence Day with a doodle on its home page since 2003.

The Independence Day of India is celebrated every year on August 15th to commemorate its independence from the British rule and also its birth as a sovereign nation. India became independent on August 15, 1947.

On this day, Indians pay tribute to those selfless people who fought and laid their precious lives to make India free from the British rule by offering prayers and holding various activities.

This historic event is celebrated with flag-hoisting ceremonies and several events. Indians on this day rejoice by enjoying patriotic songs and hoisting the national flag.

In New Delhi, the Independence Day is observed with the flagship event that takes place every year at the Red Fort where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag and addresses the nation.

Newborn girl found partly buried in farm, survives

JAIPUR: In yet another incident of discrimination against the girl child, a newborn was found partially buried in an agriculture farm in Pawata village on the city outskirts on Thursday. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared out of danger.

Doctors said she was born less then seven hours before she was spotted by a villager. Police have lodged an FIR against unidentified parents.

The police were informed about the infant about 6 pm on Thursday. "A woman was working in an agriculture field between Pawata and Pragpura villages when she heard the cries of a child. She went to the spot and found a girl wrapped in a piece of cloth," an officer said.

The woman told the police that some sand had been sprinkled on the girl's clothes to make her less visible from distance. The police rushed the girl to a primary health centre in Kotputli and later shifted her to a shelter home in Jaipur.

"She was partially buried, but it seems that she was spotted immediately after she was abandoned. So her condition was not serious. She was kept under observation throughout the night and then sent to a shelter home in Sodala area in Jaipur," said the officer.

"We have recorded the statements of some villagers who claim to have seen a woman. Records of nearby health centres and hospitals are being checked. The possibility of it being an institutional delivery is less," said the officer.

Several incidents of girl children being abandoned were reported in the state in the recent past. The state government had launched several measures to curb the practice of female foeticide and infanticide.
