Nashik youths develop 'Me Against Rape' Android app for women's safety..!!

Three Nashik youths have developed an Android app called Me Against Rape that women can use as an emergency alert system. The app allows user to seek assistance from family and friends with just press of a button.

Three youths from Nashik have come with an app that women can use as an emergency alert system alarm and seek assistance from friends or family in time of distress. The software called 'Me Against Rape' has been developed in view of the recent incidents of crime against women.
Makers of the app, Gunwant Battashe (23), engineer Anup Unnikrishanan (24) and graphic designer Jayesh Bankar (23) say the Me Against Rape app is available for Android-based smartphones for free.

The app features a one-touch helpline facility, recording facility, and can send location and time details every 10 minutes — including latitude, longitude, address and Google Maps link. The developers of the app believe the app would be very helpful in fighting against atrocities to women.
"If a woman is in any kind of a trouble, she has to just press the help button which will send an SMS to her relative or contact person as registered informing him/ her about her," say the trio.
The developers also showed off the features of the app to Nashik Commissioner of Police, Kulwant Kumar Sarangal, who said it is an "excellent" option.
There are quite a few similar apps available for smartphone users that can be used as an emergency alert system. Delhi-based security services firm Indianeye Security Pvt. Ltd. has launched a new mobile application called Eyewatch. The app ends multiple messages, images, videos, sound bites and other details such as location status with the press of a button. Users can also press the SOS button to alert contacts listed (maximum three) as the emergency contacts via SMS and e-mail.
There's also a WhyPoll app aimed at women's safety. After massive public outrage over Delhi gangrape incidents, a similar Nirbhaya app was launched for smartphone users.

Woman from Karnataka sold for Rs.1 lakh in Delhi, raped by buyer

New Delhi, Jan 14 (IANS) A 20-year-old married woman from Karnataka was sold here for Rs. 1 lakh a week ago by a human trafficking gang and raped by her buyer who kept her at his house, said police Monday.

The incident was reported to Ghazipur police station in east Delhi Jan 9 when the victim managed to flee from the clutches of the accused, identified as Zakir, who bought her from a man with whom she had come to Delhi from Karnataka Jan 6 after being promised to provide a job here.

A police officer said that Zakir raped the woman many times.

"Zakir had also beaten her up. He along with his woman associate, Geeta, was contacting some clients in Mumbai and Pune to sell the victim. Meanwhile, the victim managed to give them a slip and reported the matter to police," said the officer.

The case was registered and both the accused were arrested Jan 11 from Ghazipur area.
"The victim is married and belongs to Bangalore. Following an altercation with her husband, she left her home Jan 1 and came in contact with a human trafficking gang. The gang members then lured her for a good job in Delhi and sold her to the accused. Her missing complaint is already registered by her husband in Karnataka's Chikballapur police station," said the officer.

"After the deal got fixed, one of the trafficking gang members took the victim to Delhi via train and the victim was handed over to Zakir at Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station where he was already present with Geeta," the officer added.

During questioning, the accused revealed that a few days ago they had sold a 23-year-old woman at Delhi's G.B. Road brothel No 57.

"This woman was also rescued Monday and the brothel owner, Mumtaz, was arrested," the officer added.

Boys too are victims of sexual abuse..!!

Mumbai, Jan. 9 -- Last October Anjana Prakash, principal of Hansraj School in Andheri, was informed by a teacher about a Class 7 boy who had stopped concentrating in class and always looked troubled. She was later told by his parents that the boy had been sexually abused and sodomised by some boys in his neighbourhood.

In the midst of the demand for safety for women and girls, experts feel young boys are just as vulnerable to sexual harassment in schools as well as in homes. "Many young boys tend to get harassed by older boys, and often are too scared to complain," said Prakash. "Usually, parents do not worry as much about the company of their sons, but it is necessary to understand that young boys are very vulnerable to sexual harassment."

Till 2007, boys of all ages in the Andheri school's residential campus stayed together in the hostel. However, after cases of sexual harassment came up, it was decided that only students in the same age group will be allotted the same room.

Several school counsellors receive frequent cases of boys who are sexually harassed. "I get at least two cases in a month where a boy complains of being sexually harassed by boys from higher classes, particularly in washrooms," said Shilpa Sharma, counselling psychologist at St Francis D'Assisi High School, Borivli.
Last May, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 was passed in Parliament, which made rape a gender-neutral offence. The law came into effect on November 14.

"This Act can be used as a legal recourse in cases where boys have been sexually abused," said Pooja Taparia, founder, Arpan, a non-profit-organisation that works against sexual abuse. "Safety of boys usually tends to get ignored, and earlier there were no concrete laws to protect boys who were sexually abused."

"Nobody helped us for an hour" - rape witness

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Passers-by left the gang-raped student lying unclothed and bleeding in the street for almost an hour, the male friend who was assaulted with her said on Friday in his first public comments on the case that provoked a global outcry.

The 23-year-old student died in hospital two weeks after she was attacked on December 16 in a private bus in New Delhi, prompting street protests over the authorities' failure to stem rampant violence against women.
The graphic account from the man in a television interview is likely to add fuel to public anger over the death in a country where official statistics show one rape is reported every 20 minutes.

The woman's friend told the Zee News television network he was beaten unconscious with a metal bar by her attackers before the pair were thrown off the bus.
They lay in the street for 45 minutes before a police van arrived, and officers then spent a long time arguing about where to take them, the man said.

"We kept shouting at the police, 'please give us some clothes' but they were busy deciding which police station our case should be registered at," the man said in Hindi.

Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told Reuters GPS records show the first police van reached the scene four minutes after the police were called, and took the man and the woman to hospital within 24 minutes.
Neither the woman nor her friend have been named. Five men were charged with her gang rape and murder on Thursday. They must appear before a New Delhi court on Monday to hear the charges against them, the court said on Saturday.
