Basic Self-Defense Moves Anyone Can Do (and Everyone Should Know) Continues...!

The Most Effective Body Parts to Hit

When you're in a confrontation, you only have a few seconds and a few moves to try before the fight may be decided. Before an attacker has gained full control of you, you must do everything you can—conserving as much energy as possible—to inflict injury so you can get away. (This is no time to be civil. In a physical confrontation that calls for self-defense, it's hurt or be hurt.) So aim for the parts of the body where you can do the most damage easily: the eyes, nose, ears, neck, groin, knee, and legs.

Su Ericksen, who writes the very helpful Self-Defense for Women website, offers techniques for striking these pressure points so you can defend yourself and get to safety. She writes:
Depending on the position of the attacker and how close he is will determine where you will strike and with what part of your body you will employ. Do not step in closer, say, to strike his nose with your hand, when you can reach his knee with a kick.
When striking a target on the upper half of the body you will use your hand. Effective strikes can be made with the outer edge of your hand in a knife hand position, a palm strike or knuckle blow for softer targets or a tightly curled fist.

Here are some photos Su offers on attacking these highly sensitive pressure points (you can view others for additional pressure points on her website):

Eyes: Gouging, poking, or scratching the attacker's eyes with your fingers or knuckles would be effective, as you can imagine. Besides causing a lot of pain, this should also make your escape easier by at least temporarily interfering with his vision.

Nose: If the attacker is close in front of you, use the heel of your palm to strike up under his nose; throw the whole weight of your body into the move to cause the most pain and force him to loosen his grip on you. If he's behind you, you can strike his nose (from the side or front) with your elbow. Either way, aim for the nasal bones.

Neck: The side of the neck is a bigger target, where both the carotid artery and jugular vein are located. You could possibly temporarily stun your attacker with a knife hand strike (all fingers held straight and tightly together, with thumb tucked and slightly bent at the knuckle) at the side of the neck. (For even more injury, you could thrust your elbow into your assailant's throat while pitching the weight of your body forward. See the Target Focus Training video below.)

Knee: Su says the knee is an ideal self-defense target, vulnerable from every angle and easily kicked without risk of your foot being grabbed. Kick the side of the knee to cause injury or partially incapacitate your attacker. Kicking the front of the knee may cause more injury but is less likely to result in imbalance.

Basic Self-Defense Moves Anyone Can Do (and Everyone Should Know)

Would you be able to defend yourself and your loved ones if someone were to physically attack you? It's a question most of us don't want to consider, but violence is, unfortunately, a fact of life. Thankfully, regardless of strength, size, or previous training, anyone can learn several effective self-defense techniques. Here's how to prepare for and stay safe in common real-world violent situations.

Get Loud and Push Back

As soon as the attacker touches you or it's clear that escape isn't possible, shout loudly ("BACK OFF!") and push back at him or her (for simplicity's sake we're going to use "him" for the rest of the article, although your opponent could be female). This does two things: it signals for help and it lets the attacker know you're not an easy target. The video at top from Rob Redenbach, a former trainer of Nelson Mandela's bodyguards, shows why this is the first thing you need to do. It may not dissuade all attackers, but getting loud will warn off those that were looking for easy prey.

90% rapes consensual: Haryana Congress leader

Chandigarh: At a time when a spate of rape cases has brought shame to Haryana, a local Congress leader has raked up a controversy saying ‘majority of rapes in the state are consensual’.

Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) member Dharamvir Goyat made the controversial remarks at an interaction with media persons at Hisar on Thursday.

"If we go into the details of rape cases and abductions, it is found that victims and accused in 90% of cases are runaway couples. So the cases are consensual," Goyat was reported as saying by The Times of India.

The remarks drew sharp criticism, with the National Commission for Women chairperson Mamata Sharma asking Goyat to "respect women before making tardy assessments of such a heinous crime".

"Rape is a reproach on Haryana. Rather than suggesting measures to control and set his government's house in order, he's inciting more such cases" Sharma told the daily.

Just two days ago, opposition leader and INLD chief Om Parkash Chautala had seconded the Rohtak Khap’s suggestion that girls should be married young to prevent rape cases.

Referring to marriages during Mughal period, Chautala had said that "people would marry girls early during those days to prevent cases of rapes". He however retracted his endorsement later.

The Congress government in Haryana has been under fire after 17 rape cases were reported over the past one month in the state. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had on Tuesday visited the family of a Dalit rape victim in Jind. The girl had committed suicide after being gangraped.

Smart self defense tips for women

Common sense is a powerful weapon that can fell any opponent. It helps you to come out of potentially dangerous arenas without a fight.

Unfortunately, this lesson is not imparted to most women in India. Naturally few use it when they are faced with piquant situations.

What should a woman do if she finds herself alone in the company of a strange male as she prepares to enter a lift in a high-rise apartment late at night?
There is nothing to fear.
Enter the lift. If you need to reach the 13th floor, press all the buttons up to your destination. No one will dare attack you in a lift that stops on every floor. Simple.

The examples are endless.

Most women I have met in my 30 years as a trainer in self-defence techniques harbour the illusion that one needs to be powerfully built to take on a male aggressor.
Many also feel that without knowing judo or karate, they can be easy victims to lecherous men.
Nothing can be farther from the truth.

In Bangalore and in several other cities, my team holds workshops to explain in detail to women how they can come under attack in the most unexpected circumstances.
So it is good to learn and understand simple but effective self-defence methods. These need not be based on a rigid set of rules.
Rather, your safety lies in your habits, attitudes and activities. It is also learning what handy tools you can convert into powerful weapons for your protection.

How to stay safe while traveling in a cab or a vehicle? How to use every inch of your body to develop devastating power? How to address real street situations? How to protect yourself from a much stronger attacker?

One can learn all this in a matter of hours.
If a stranger tries to attack you when you are alone in your house, run into the kitchen.
You alone know where the chili power and turmeric are kept. And where the knives and plates are. All these can be turned into deadly weapons.

If nothing else, start throwing plates and utensils all over. Let them break. Scream. Remember that noise is the greatest enemy of a molester. He does not want to be caught.

Before getting into an auto at night, note down its registration number. Then use the mobile to call your family or friend and pass on the details to them in the language the driver understands.
Even if no one answers your call, pretend you are in a conversation.
The driver now knows someone has his details and he will be in serious trouble if anything goes wrong. He is now bound to take you home safe and sound. A potential attacker is now your de facto protector!

What if the driver turns into a street he is not supposed to - and you feel you are entering a danger zone?
Use the handle of your purse or your stole (dupatta) to wrap around his neck and pull him back. Within seconds, he will feel choked and helpless.
What if you don't have a purse or a stole? Just pull him back by his collar. The top button of his shirt would then do the same trick.

If you are stalked at night, enter a shop or a house and explain your predicament. If it is night and shops are not open, go inside an ATM box.
ATM centres always have security guards. They are also monitored by close circuit television. Fearing identification, no one will dare attack you.
What is important is to stay cool at all times. When you have spare time, think of everyday situations where you can be in trouble. And how you can save yourself.

After all, being mentally alert is the greatest weapon you can ever have.

Gender got Talent!!! by Quadd [MUST READ]

I don't know what is happening these days, and why life is so surprising these days, I am discovering bitter realities of life and I don't know why every reality hurt these days.

Once again I have a story, and once again I don't want to write it. And I am not able to decide which genre I need to express this time. So, let the head think and let the fingers type, and see what comes up.

A famous TV show title read as "India Got Talent", and I know this is right. India got talent. But ever we hear such title for any TV show "Girls got talent" or "Boys got talent". I wonder when INDIA have no gender why talent have gender.

My readers will be surprised that out of the blue I am talking about gender of talent. Gender of talent? You must be thinking I am gone crazy. A thing which is not living got gender. But, I am not crazy. And If I am crazy, believe me my reader after few paragraphs you will also go crazy and start believing that even a non-living thing like Talent got gender.

As indiaonlinepages.com, says there are 591.4 million women in country by now (2012) from total population of 1.22 billion, which is around 48% of Indian population, from which 50% population are between age of 0-25.

As mapsofindia.com, says the literacy rate of women 64.46% as compared to 82.14% in males, whereas whole India Literacy rate is 74.04%, as per 2011 Census updated on 25 August 2011.

nlm.nic.in, gives following reasons for this literacy inequality:
  1. Gender based inequality.
  2. Social discrimination and economic exploitation.
  3. Occupation of girl child in domestic chores.
  4. Low enrolment of girls in schools.
  5. Low retention rate and high dropout rate.
I will not go in detail of these reasons, because this is not my topic of today's writing. Because these facts don't matter, what matter is what we see and write.

My focus is on urban India, the most developed India, with modern culture, modern outfits and modern thinking. But is this urban India got truly modern or just got developed? This is a big question, lets try to find some answers.

I really subscribe to view of my 'International Politics' lecturer, Ms. Alka Vij, when in her mood she used to say this in between her classes, "Jeans to pehan li humne par, nayi soch nahi pa sake..", which in English means, We have started wearing modern outfits like jeans or denim but our thought is still not modern.

Honestly speaking I never understood the complete meaning of this statement of my teacher. At that time I thought she means to say that we wear modern outfits but we are not easy wearing them, because after wearing them either we feel special or we feel that we are revealing, and we like revealing is other part of the story. I related my this theory with girls and boys who wear jeans.

But now, I realize which deep thought she got behind this simple looking statement in Hindi. But I will come bit later to it.

One thing is very shocking, if we talk about rural areas, we can understand differences between male and female and their rudimentary thinking about women inferior to men and that they got separate jobs to do in social setup.

But in Urban areas, I have seen a new kind of differences:
  1. A brother and sister studies at same school. They obviously live at same house, and they have same bus stop. Sister is younger to her brother. But, brother have subscribed to secure and comfortable school bus, whereas sister daily wait for public transport full of unknown persons, for her same destination of school and back home.
  2. Another brother got cycle for reaching his tuitions. And his younger sister goes there by foot.
  3. A brilliant elder sister, who has immense talent in particular subject and she managed to get a dignified position is council of that subject. But she can't do overtimes and can't work with full dedication at her post, as her teacher is male. And she can do that if her younger brother who is no way interested in her subject, join her on her duty.
  4. Girls students in urban schools prefer to fail or have below standard performances rather to go for help to their male teachers, as they have strong instructions from parents of being aware.
  5. Girls can't work on Internet on regular basis as compared to boys.
  6. Girls can't use mobile phones, whereas boys at same house have 2-3 numbers....personal numbers.
  7. If a girl have social network ID like facebook, they are definitely spoiled.
  8. Wrong deed of a girl gets her a label for life, like if she had affair in past, so she have it with her name forever, which is highly unlikely for boys.
  9. At last, girls have certain places to go, certain people to talk, certain topics to talk, whereas boys are free to explore and learn.
Now, if we see the results of all recent classes for any university and board, we have one common fact, TOPPERS ARE GIRLS!
And one common fact prevailed is, ITS CRAMMING!
If its really cramming, then why don't boys do it and top!
Its a sheer talent that women proved on every front, provided whenever she got a chance to compete.
God have not seen gender while gifting talents, then why we see while training them. If we are afraid about their security, like teacher may abuse them or anyone do same with them, OK, then when we will give them chance to excel and A CHANCE TO BELIEVE THEMSELVES THAT THEY CAN SECURE THEMSELVES. When we will give them chance to be strong and stronger.
And question above all, is this security issue enough for ruining talents?
And why don't boys have this security issue, can't they be misused?
Yes then can be misused. BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS OF 'ACCEPTANCE' AFTER MISUSE. Girl's life is ended after such incident and Boy's get over just like any ordinary bad happening. Can't we give this Social Security to our daughters and sisters?
This rudimentary and narrow thinking, force us to think that genders got talent, like society give more freedom to boys as they are more talented and less freedom to girls as they are less talented. THE DIVISION WHICH GOD NEVER THOUGHT OF, BUT WE MADE IT A LAW OF NATURE!

And finally, I understood simple-looking statement of my teacher, We allowed our daughters and sisters that much of freedom which declare "US" MODERN in society. Apart from this modernity, urban and rural girls are no different in freedom and modernity.

And today when I realised this true meaning of my teacher's statement, I am not surprised only, also something within me is just choked and died.
