Bihar likely to rope in Aamir Khan to 'save daughters'

PATNA: Strongly pleading for a Padma award to Aamir Khan, state health minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey on Monday said the state government was actively considering making the Bollywood actor the brand ambassador for the state government's campaign against female foeticide, to be launched in the state from May 30.
Inspired by Aamir's debut venture on television 'Satyameva Jayate', Choubey said people like Aamir should be given the highest award for raising socially-relevant issues in such a strong manner. "We have made Bhojpuri singer Manoj Tiwary and cancer specialist Dr J K Singh the brand ambassador for our cancer awareness programme," he said.
According to the minister, there are altogether 1,145 registered ultrasound centres in Bihar of which around 60% are located in Patna. A fresh survey would be conducted across the state to find out how many new such centres have opened. "We will convene a meeting of Indian Medical Association officials in June to formulate a fresh strategy to check female foeticide," he said.
The health minister also announced deputation of a liaison officer in Mumbai to assist patients coming from Bihar to Mumbai for cancer treatment. The decision follows Choubey's recent visit to Mumbai where he saw the miserable condition of Bihari patients in Mumbai's cancer hospitals. Among 80% of the patients in cancer wards there are from Bihar and most of them do not know what help they can get from their native state, Choubey said and added he would talk to the chief minister in this regard. Help for the purpose will also be taken from NGOs and Biharis living outside the state, the minister said.
He said the 'Bitiya Bachao', or save daughter, campaign would be launched from Sultanganj (Bhagalpur) on May 30 by taking oath on the bank of Ganga to prevent female foeticide. He expressed concern over the declining sex ratio in the state. According to 2011 census, the male:female ratio was 1000:916 as against 1000:919 in 2001.
"I admit the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Test Act has not been implemented properly in the state," Choubey said. Action has been taken in only three cases so far. Among these three cases, the two hospitals which were closed down for violating the law, resumed functioning, he said. "Action will be taken against the Patna civil surgeon in this regard," he said and added a committee would be constituted under the chairmanship of health secretary which will inquire into the charges against the civil surgeon and the private hospitals concerned. The committee will submit its report within one week, the minister said.
According to the minister, two new bodies have been constituted to check female foeticide in the state. One is the state supervisory body chaired by the health minister himself and the other the state advisory body. He said the services of CID and other agencies would also be taken to check female foeticide in the state.

'Satyamev Jayate' to touch India’s heart [Impact of first two episodes]

Star India's and Aamir Khan's much awaited show, Satyamev Jayate, was launched on May 6 in the 11am Sunday slot. The show was shrouded in mystery even after a teaser press conference and launch promos, and it was finally launched and telecast across nine channels including Doordarshan - a first-of-its-kind experiment. Also, it was dubbed in three southern languages.

Now, with the first ratings of the show coming out, it's time to analyse whether the show has managed to really touch India's heart. After the first two episodes, which focused on female foeticide and child sexual abuse, there has been impact, says the channel.

"The Madhya Pradesh government terminated the licences of 64 maternity clinics in Bhopal, while in Rajasthan, the licences of five sonography clinics in Jaipur were suspended. The Rajasthan Chief Justice has also okayed the setting up of a fastrack court for settling the sting operation cases showcased in the first episode, which recorded an overall 4.1 Television Rating (TVR)," says an official from the channel.

"The second episode too has had similar impact, with victims of child sexual abuse coming out on public forums like radios and the online media, to talk about the exploitation they faced. The NGO Childline has got thousands of calls from people reaching out to them," adds the official.

With the way it's progressing, it seems that the show is choosing topics carefully, picking hard-hitting issues which affect people's lives. While it remains to be seen whether the show will be able to sustain the emotions it has generated, the first two episodes did dominate the social media space immediately after their telecast.

Aamir Khan's small-screen debut in Satyamev Jayate a smashing hit; ad rates higher than KBC's

MUMBAI: The response to Aamir Khan's small-screen debut has been the subject of breathless speculation, sometimes appearing to exceed the hype around his films.
The verdict is now in, with numbers from TAM Media Research, which were released on Wednesday, seeming to indicate that Khan's debut as a commenter on public affairs has been well received, with the absolute number of viewers exceeding those of the first episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), a popular quiz show, in 2011.
The first episode of Khan's show, Satyamev Jayate, which was telecast on May 6, received a Television Viewership Rating (TVR) of 4.09 and was watched by 9 crore people.
The 13-episode programme is being shown across eight channels of Star India, owned by Rupert Murdoch'sNews Corp, as well as on DD National, the flagship channel of state-owned broadcaster Doordarshan, at 11 am on Sunday. The talk show hosted by Khan, one of the big beasts of Hindi movies, highlights social issues such as female foeticide (the subject of the first show) with the intention of prompting the authorities to act.
According to TAM, a media research agency that specialises in monitoring television viewership, the first episode reached out to Rs 2.67 crore viewers. This, says a channel source, translates to a viewership of 90 million (Rs 9 crore) using extrapolation methods common in the industry.
KBC, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan and telecast on Sony entertainment channel, had a reach of around Rs 7.9 crore, though the comparison is imprecise as it was shown on prime time, which is 9 pm, and only on one channel. It had a TVR of 3.5. Khan followed up the first episode with a highly-publicised meeting with Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot, urging him to fast-track court cases that followed a sting operation exposing the practice of illegal sex determination in the state.
Khan, new to the TVR game, says it is the absolute number that is important. "For me, I don't relate to ratings. What matters to me are the on-ground changes, the various governments that have reacted, the doctors in Rajasthan who have banded together to explain to their errant colleagues to change. This is what I set out to do and that it can happen on this scale is what thrills me."
Media-buying sources say the ad rates commanded by Satyamev Jayate come to Rs 4 - Rs 5 lakh for a 10-second slot, a premium over KBC Season 5, which got Rs 2.5 - Rs 3 lakh per 10 seconds. Title sponsorAirtel paid a hefty Rs 18 crore, more than Cadbury's title sponsorship for KBC at Rs 16 crore.
Mallikarjun Das, CEO-India at Starcom, attributes this to robust demand. "There is no slump in TV and this programme has delivered. In a fragmented media market, a 4-5 TVR is very good and if the show maintains at 4, its job is done. Besides, a brand backing a show like this gets several benefits and an equity rub-off on the brand as well," he says.
Media planners are divided on the likely response to the remaining 12 episodes.
"I expect the ratings to hold at best, or maybe even drop. It will be very creditable if it ends its run with an average that is higher. This is not just because of the seriousness of the content, but also some of the early curiosity waning and people picking and choosing issues they want to watch in its entirety.
The programme is long and, therefore, sustaining an average rating through its 1.5 hours is also a challenge," says Shubha George, CEO, MEC. Star India CEO Uday Shankar is confident that viewers will continue to watch the show. "It is difficult to predict whether it continues to hold, but no show has been tuned in by so many people," he said.

Dheere Dheere, Haule Haule

                                                          Heart - Touching Song

Do you know your self-defense A,B,Cs?

People try very hard in life to complicate things that aren't that complicated.
Women's self-defense is one of those areas. Lots of folks spend time trying to "scare" women into taking classes instead of just addressing a basic fact: you can't defend yourself if you haven't learned your self defense ABCs.
A is for Awareness & Avoidance
Sounds pretty simple, right? The reality is that if we pay more attention to our surroundings and our "women's intuition", we can very quickly highlight potentially dangerous situations and/or individuals. By using color coding methods and awareness strategies, we are able to provide ourselves with escape routes to avoid potentially dangerous scenarios. Awareness & avoidance training is all about survival and not having to engage in a violent encounter.

B is for Body Language & Boundaries
How we carry ourselves says a lot about who we are. Predators are looking for prey and the last thing you want to do is to appear as prey. So how do you not look like prey? By making eye contact, shoulders back, and walking with purpose you send a clear signal that you are aware and not an easy target. Boundaries are tough for women given that we are trained as caretakers. But the reality is that you need to feel comfortable in saying "NO" and setting a clear boundary as to how close someone gets to you and what you allow them to do. Body language & boundary setting is all about using your body and voice to send a clear signal that you are not easy prey.

C is for Contact & Confidence
Contact is simply being able to deal with a violent situation with confidence in your own personal power. Do you have the personal protection and self defense skill sets to fight off, if you have to, a violent predator? Are you confident in your skills? Are you confident in your ability to control your fear and act? Do you have a game plan if confronted with violence? Contact & confidence training teaches you the multitude of self defense options you have available to you.
The ABCs of women's self defense aren't that tough. They do, however, require some training. None of us are born with all knowledge. We all train and learn to better ourselves and to keep ourselves safe.

Female foeticide: Woman doctor caught while she was allegedly aborting girl child in Haryana

Yamuna Nagar, Haryana:  Daughters are precious, don't kill them even before they are born - this was the message actor Aamir Khan wanted to spread through the first episode of his much talked-about TV show "Satyamev Jayate." Aamir talked at length about the alarming statistics on female foeticide and shared case studies - all with the aim of convincing the masses to discourage and help eradicate the social evil. So has the message reached all intended recipients? Well, contrary to the expectations of many, it seems not yet.
In Haryana's Yamuna Nagar area, a Delhi suburb, a woman doctor has been arrested after she was allegedly caught aborting a girl child during a raid conducted by health department officials.

Priyanka, a BMS doctor from Saharanpur in UP, was caught red-handed when the health department of Yamuna Nagar raided bungalow no 43 in Jagadhari district's posh Saraswati Colony.  A team from the Red Cross Society also accompanied them.
Priyanka has reportedly been running the clinic, along with her sister Parul, for the last five years. Parul is also a BMS doctor. According to a cleaner at the clinic, the two doctors perform at least six to seven abortions every month. And the foetuses, the worker revealed, are later flushed in toilets.

"I have been working here for the last five to six years. At least six to seven abortions take place here each month. They are then disposed in toilets," she said.
The police have begun a probe into the matter to find out more details. "There is a lady doctor who performs the abortions. A team of doctors led the raid and we came here because of that. A legal enquiry will now follow. This is in a residential area and you can't tell by looking at it that it's a hospital. We will investigate the matter," said Rajiv Miglani, the SHO of Yamuna Nagar.

The arrested doctor will be produced in a court later today. She claims she had to abort the child because her patient was in a very critical condition.

The woman who was allegedly getting her girl child aborted has refused to speak on camera.

Safety Tips for Women

Safety tips for women provides you with common sense, day to day measures you can take to protect yourself against criminal activity.

The first and foremost tip for an effective self-defense countermeasure to keeping yourself and loved ones safe is awareness. By constantly educating yourself to what dangers you could possibly face, you become better prepared to recognize these dangers and plan your response.
Each of the following tip articles provide information on real life threat scenarios and how you can prepare yourself to ensure your safety. Having the knowledge and a pre-planned set of actions to take for as many scenarios of danger you may face can greatly improve your chances of not being victimized.

Basic Safety

  • Always have a mentally rehearsed plan of action, such as what you would do, or where you would go in the event you were victimized in some way.
  • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. Walk with your head up while displaying a sense of confidence and purpose. When a tiger chases its prey, it never goes for the fastest and strongest. Instead, it picks the slowest and weakest for its meal. The same can be said about human predators. If two people are walking down the street, the less confident of the two will have a greater risk of being victimized.
  • Walk confidently, keeping aware of the people in front of you, behind you and to your sides.
  • Do not assume that because you live or work in a good area that you can relax your guard. Predators come from every economic, ethnic, and religious background. Serial killers come from the ranks of brothers, fathers, grandfathers, cousins, uncles, neighbors and co-workers.
  • Always trust your instincts, if you feel something is wrong, act on your feelings. Studies have shown that most people that have been victimized had a feeling something wasn't right just before they were attacked.
  • Always be physically and mentally prepared to run or escape an attacker, or as a last resort, to fight back. Have a plan of action and keep it simple. There are no absolutes and nothing will work in every situtation; but a good plan of action that may be as simple as running and screaming for help, can significantly improve your chances of escape.
  • Wear sensible shoes and clothing that will not rstrict your movement. It is also a good idea to carry a personal alarm, whistle, key-chain baton, or pepper spray. However, you should seek training on the use of these items to maximize your ability to properly use them. Be aware that items like key-chain batons and pepper spray should never be carried on any form of public transportation or into any building or facility that bans these types of personal defense weapons.
  • If possible, do not restrict the ability to use both hands by carrying a purse, bags or many packages. When walking to and from your home, vehicle, or work place, try to keep only your keys in your hand. If you have bags or packages, push them in a cart, if possible.
  • When you do your banking, avoid a routine. If you carry large amounts of cash, have someone follow you or go with you.
  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • If you feel that you are in danger, never feel awkward or embarrassed about enlisting the help of others.
  • If someone attempts to rob you with a weapon, try to keep very calm and do not make any quick movements. Cooperate with the predator by giving them any valuables they may be demanding from you.
  • If someone attempts to force or con you into going with them, turn and run "like lighting" while screaming at the top of your lungs for help.

    The Ultimate Knee Kick

Knee Kick Training as a Basic Self Defense Move will help you develop the most powerful self defense weapon in the human arsenal.
The "force" of your knees are always with you! Learn to use your legs as a self defense weapon with a Knee Kick.
Training with this basic self defense move has other advantages. A program of defense that focuses on the first move one makes after being grabbed/assaulted is to move in.

The leg is fast, harder to grab by an adversary, and even when exhausted or tired you can still deliver a powerful kick. If you find yourself on the ground with an attacker on top of you a sharp series of kicks to the butt/prostate area will get results.
